Electricity supplier Engie announced on February 6, 2025 the implementation of two new measures to support beneficiaries of the energy check.

Engie will exceptionally implement two measures to support households in energy poverty, a top-up of the energy check for its beneficiary customers of up to 50 euros and a doubling of its contribution to the Housing Solidarity Fund (FSL), the energy company announced on Thursday.

“We have decided to support customers who need it most in a context of rising taxes”on electricity, Céline Regnault, Engie's general public director, told AFP.

A 50 euro discount

On February 1, the government raised the electricity tax (excise) by around 50%, marking the end of the tariff shield put in place from the beginning of 2022 during the energy crisis to moderate bills in the face of soaring prices.

“Even if regulated tariffs ultimately fell overall (on February 1, Editor's note), we still have electricity prices that remain at a high level compared to what we have seen before 2022”, she added.

Nearly 700,000 Engie customers who will benefit from the energy check in 2024 to pay their electricity and/or natural gas bills will benefit from a discount of 50 euros including tax, the group indicates. Customers with an active contract as of November 30, 2024 will receive this discount on their next bill (bimonthly, half-yearly or annual).

A contribution to the FSL doubled

Engie has also doubled its participation in the Housing Solidarity Fund (FSL), increasing it to 12 million euros for 2024 compared to 6 million euros per year since 2010. This Fund is managed by the departments and allows an applicant to benefit from financial assistance in the event of difficulties in paying the costs related to their housing, in particular energy bills or the carrying out of work.

In 2023, the Housing Solidarity Fund had helped 65 000 families, whether Engie customers or not, the group emphasizes.

Engie had already exceptionally doubled its contribution to the FSL in 2022, a year marked by soaring prices in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

The energy check benefits, depending on the year, around 5.7 million households, according to the Directorate for Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees).

According to the consumer association Cnafal, households benefiting from the energy check are concentrated “in the first two deciles of the population”, “those living below the poverty line”.
