New day of the Europa League this Thursday with the matches of Nice and Lyon.
After the Champions League, its little sister, the Europa League, is also making its comeback this week with the matches of Nice and Lyon. On the first day, the Lyonnais got their European season off to a perfect start by winning against the Greeks of Olympiakos. For the second match, Alexandre Lacazette's teammates will have a slightly more difficult task with the Scots of Glasgow Rangers.
For Nice, the second day promises to be more than delicate with a trip to Italian soil on the side of Lazio Rome of Matteo Guendouzi who has been revived for several months. This meeting will be a good test to see where Nice is according to the coach of the Aiglons Franck Haise. “From what I have seen of them, they play a complete football, which knows how to be aggressive at the right time, where it runs, with powerful players, experienced, technically fine, we feel an intelligence of play. It is a complete team. ÇThat's going to be a good benchmark to see where we are."
The 2024-25 Europa League, which has been scheduled to start on Wednesday 25 September, is a completely revamped edition of the competition, with UEFA deciding to increase the number of teams from 32 to 36. Gone is the traditional group stage, replaced by a single league where Each team will face 8 different opponents (4 at home, 4 away), based on a random draw, similar to the changes made in the Champions League. At the end of this first phase, until January 30, 2025, the top eight in this unique league will be directly qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League. The teams ranked from 9th to 24th place will play play-offs to reach the eighth round. Beyond this 24th place, it is a pure and simple elimination that awaits the teams with the lowest positions.
