Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the new European Commission, succeeds Margrethe Vestager, and will now be responsible for enforcing EU antitrust laws, implementing the Digital Markets Act and combating anti-competitive practices. This week, she gave an interview to Bloomberg, during which she recalled that a break-up of Google is still under consideration.

“This is an issue that is of course on the agenda, and we are trying to work with the other competition authorities concerned around the world, including the American competition authorities,”, she said. “It is important to consider this potential division, the sale of some of these activities. We will assess the situation on a case-by-case basis.”

In the United States, the Department of Justice is also requesting a break-up

As a reminder, Margrethe Vestager had already mentioned the possibility of a break-up of Google, in order to prevent anti-competitive practices in the field of online advertising. Otherwise, Teresa Ribera also makes this statement while in the United States, the Department of Justice recently requested a separation between Google and its Chrome browser.

As a reminder, in Uncle Sam’s country, Google lost its antitrust lawsuit against the government. And now, the courts must determine what measures to apply. It is within the framework of this process that the Department of Justice recommended forcing the sale of the Chrome browser. But for now, it is not certain that the judge will favour this option.

Indeed, for the American government, this separation “will definitively end Google's control over this essential access point to search and will allow competing search engines to access the browser that, for many users, is a gateway to the Internet.”

  • The European Union is still studying the dismantling of Google
  • This is what the executive vice-president of the new European Commission, who succeeds Margrethe Vestager, and who is now in charge of the application of the EU's antitrust laws, indicated
  • Margrethe Vestager had mentioned this possible dismantling to prevent anti-competitive practices in the field of online advertising
  • In the United States, the Department of Justice recently requested a separation between Google and its Chrome browser
