L’Expo Lego® attire la foule à Saint-Privat-des-Vieux, une commune voisine d’Alès, et réunit de véritables passionnés jusqu'au soir du dimanche 12 janvier. Rencontres.

Gilles Roux, the president of Artofbrick, the association that is organizing the 11th Lego® Expo this weekend at the Saint-Privat-des-Vieux sports hall, is smiling. This Saturday, January 11, early in the afternoon, the crowd is rushing into the aisles of the show and telling him that “it's off to a great start. And this year's theme, dinosaurs, is popular. Especially with children. They're crazy about bricks!”

It is clear that the youngest have a hard time tearing themselves away from the dioramas and other paintings that the 50 or so exhibitors present are unveiling. Ionis Sigalas, a 45-year-old from Var, is one of the handful of new enthusiasts at this edition to deliver his creations. Alongside a scene taking place in space, he presents his universe taken from “Ninjago”, “quite popular with children because the animated series has been running for a long time”. Among the brand's official structures, “modified to embellish them”, he created “a temple” and, using a thousand pieces, “a torii inspired by a traditional gate that actually exists in Japan”. His work, attacked in 2018, is in perpetual evolution; it evolves to the rhythm of the seasons of “Ninjago”. As for knowing the number of pieces used to arrive at what he unveils there, at the foot of the Cévennes, for two days, that's enough to give the forty-year-old food for thought. “Between 40,000 and 50,000”, he breathes. “It's going up really fast!”

“I used to play with it when I was little too,” says the father of an exhibitor

Ionis Sigalas is one of those people who played with Lego® as a child, before returning to it as an adult. First to get hold of the “Space” series that he didn't have as a child, then, when it was complete, because he was “seduced by the quality” of the brand's new productions. A few meters away from him, Axel Mezade, aged 25 and originally from Montpellier, is a regular at this exhibition and has never stopped fiddling with the little coloured bricks. “I used to play it when I was little too”, his father smiles, while his son, a fan for 3 or 4 years, puts back the tree that someone accidentally pulled down with his coat.

The crowd at a mini-concert to discover

In a few minutes his creation becomes complete again. “I imagined everything!”, declares Axel Mezade, while presenting his concert: an animated stage with a giant screen showing real videos, stands, a multitude of characters, etc. He has already presented this work in Saint-Privat-des-Vieux, but it has been “remade from A to Z by enlarging it, adding lights, the backstage and a lot of crowd”.

The Hérault native has been working on this concert since 2012. The idea to build it came to him, “as a kid, while doing concerts with (his) uncle who is a DJ”. On the other hand, there is no point in asking him what group is performing on this miniature stage. “It doesn't have a name!”, jokes Axel Mezade. “Everyone imagines what they want…” Like the other exhibitors, they have imagined many decors, carried by “Star Wars”, Ferrari racing cars, “Ghostbusters”, etc.

Open from 10am to 6pm (entrance: €4). I subscribe to read the rest
