Fabrice Andrivon's review: “Babygirl”, a real turkey, more laughable than sexual

Nostalgic for the erotic-chic stinkers of the 1980s, those who saw Mickey Rourke teasing a scarlet Kim Basinger or Sharon Stone showing more than enough to a bloodless Michael Douglas ? Babygirl should please you. We haven't seen such a look at sex for two good decades, such a corny essay on the relationships between men and women, proof that if things change, it's a little slowly.

We see Nicole Kidman (or her shadow, so much has botox wreaked havoc) fall head over heels for a youngster who is a fan of sado-maso pleasures and soft domination. As in 50 Shades of Grey, yes, with the added value that this film boasts of a certain sophisticated feminism: it would be about documenting the emancipation of a woman and her awareness of her own freedom.

Terrible, ridiculous, embarrassing

It would in any case be sulphurous and disturbing. It's just appalling, ridiculous and even a little embarrassing: we come away with the impression of a Kidman now reduced to the state of an object and in terms of feminism, we see rather a return to the good old traditions, sex inducing guilt, puritanism and hetero norms well within the framework.

Cold and overly calculated staging

The actress nevertheless gives herself body and soul to the cause, but nothing helps: no trouble emanates from this cold, overly calculated staging and we say to ourselves that the recipes for eroticism have hardly evolved in American cinema.

Here is a real turkey, more laughable than sexual, which misses all its effects and goes so far as to shoot itself in the foot in terms of its speech.
