Four people died and 15 others were injured Wednesday evening when a marquee collapsed on the stage of a meeting of a candidate for the Mexican presidency, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, in the north of Mexico, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The Mexican president cited, in a message published on his X account Wednesday evening, an assessment of the governor of State of Nuevo León, Samuel García, who reported “four dead and 15 injured” after the accident.

The marquee that housed Jorge Álvarez Maynez's podium , at a meeting in northern Mexico, collapsed causing “victims”, the candidate and his campaign team had announced earlier.

“I am doing well and am in communication with authorities to follow up on what happened. The most important thing right now is to take care of the victims of the accident,” Maynez wrote on X.

The accident happened in the city of San Pedro Garza, which is part of the metropolitan area of the industrial center of Monterrey, in the northeastern state of Nuevo Leon.

M . Maynez added that his team members who were injured are being treated in hospital. “I am returning to the scene to support the victims,” he said.

Videos broadcast on local networks show the moment when a giant screen collapsed on Mr. Maynez and other members of the center-left Movimiento Ciudadano party, who managed to take cover.

Other images published on X show people being extracted from a pile of iron structures.

For his part , Nuevo León Governor Samuel García said the region was experiencing thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rains.

“There has been a misfortune. Strong winds collapsed a stage at an election campaign closing here in San Pedro,” he explained in a video posted on his social media.
