Ferrari’s first electric car is just around the corner, and the automaker has no intention of abandoning one of the most iconic aspects of its brand. While electric motors are relatively quiet, the company is expected to mimic an exhaust sound, similar to Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N.
A sound to please customers ?
A video posted on Instagram by car expert Varryx reveals what the vehicle will sound like. It features a distinct, combustion-like rumble coming from Ferrari’s test car. According to the account’s owner, the sound is coming from under the rear bumper, as the exhaust pipes are fake.
The Italian brand is keeping its promise. Last year, its CEO Benedetto Vigna assured that its first electric vehicle would not be silent, in order to keep one of his company’s signatures. Its customers and fans are big fans of roaring engines, so it’s hard to imagine them getting excited about a car without any sound. Note that it is also a question of safety, the noise allowing pedestrians to warn of the approaching vehicle.
Ferrari has been working on this technology for several years. Two years ago, it filed a patent for a ” reproduction device for producing a sound that can be associated with an electric motor ». Objective: to amplify the sound of electric motors at the rear of the vehicle. The system is supposed to be silent when the car is moving at low speeds, then activates when the driver presses the accelerator.

Presentation this year
Ferrari's first electric vehicle is expected to be presented this year for a price of around 500,000 dollars (approximately 488,160 euros). Design-wise, don't be fooled by the prototype shown in the video, there's a good chance the final product will differ greatly. In fact, many of the parts in the latter are borrowed from existing Ferrari and Maserati models.
For now, Ferrari has not confirmed what body style its first electric vehicle will adopt. So it could be a crossover like this one or a sports car, or even a more traditional supercar.
The brand predicts that electric cars will only represent 5% of its sales in 2026, a figure that should reach 40% in 2030. As a reminder, the European Union (EU) will ban the sale of thermal cars by 2035.
