Fire in a residence leaves one dead and several injured in Surrey

Surrey RCMP indicates that 144th Street is closed in both directions due to a fire on Monday.

One person died and several others were injured during a fire at a home on New Year's Day in Surrey, according to emergency services ;city emergency.

According to Surrey Fire Department Deputy Chief Rob Aldcorn, firefighters responded to a fire Monday near the intersection of 144th Street and 26th Avenue.

Firefighters noticed that there were a lot of flames and smoke, he explains. We were able to rescue three people from a balcony.

However, Rob Aldcorn adds that' #x27;one of the occupants was found dead inside the building.

In total, rescuers responded to 10 people, 6 of whom had to go to the hospital for minor injuries, according to the deputy chief of the Fire Department.

A dozen firefighters, three trucks, two ambulances and a police vehicle were on scene Monday morning.

Investigators are working in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to determine the cause of the fire which caused significant damage to the residence, according to Rob Aldcorn.

We were told that smoke was escaping from several places in the residence and that flames were escaping from certain windows, he said.

Based on observations by CBC/Radio-Canada , a dozen firefighters, three trucks, two ambulances and a police vehicle were on the scene Monday morning.

Surrey RCMP say 144th Street is closed in both directions and the public should avoid the area.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the RCMP.
