Forget Colmar and Strasbourg, this Alsatian Christmas market is the most authentic of all

Spread the love

This small Alsatian town of character has the most authentic Christmas market in France.

While Christmas markets can be found in many towns in France, those held in Alsace are particularly renowned and welcome tens of thousands of visitors each year. These historic markets, with their festive squares and timeless locations, bring the magic of Christmas to life in Alsace. While the most famous are those in Colmar and Strasbourg, this lesser-known town in Alsace nevertheless offers a market remarkable for its authenticity, far from the crowd.

In 2023, it climbed to the second step of the podium for the most authentic Christmas market according to a survey launched by France Bleu Alsace on its Facebook page, just behind that of Colmar. Every second weekend in December, the Christkindelsmärik, or “market of the infant Jesus” – this is the name given in Alsatian to the traditional market Christmas – takes place in the magical setting of this town of character, where 200 stands showcase exclusively local local products and crafts, renowned for their great variety and diversity, from decoration (wooden toys, pottery, jewelry, porcelain) to gastronomy (truffles from the Grand-Est, foie gras, snails, wines, honey, Bredele).

It takes place in the capital of the Pays de Hanau, one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Alsace, which has charming half-timbered houses, magnificent bay windows and many buildings listed as illuminated historical monuments.
