The founder of the Nationalist Party of Canada, Travis Patron, was sentenced to 200 days in prison for criminal harassment. He was accused of harassing a man and his girlfriend at Midtown Mall in Saskatoon last July.

On the day of the incident, Travis Patron confronted the two people before beginning to ask questions about their culture and background, then asked the man why he was with a Canadian, although he was not born in Canada.

The man he approached was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who was not in service at that time.

Mr. Patron, who is representing himself in the case, told the Court of King's Bench in Saskatoon on Friday that he doesn't understand why he was accused of harassment and maintained that he carried out these actions out of duty.

Judge John Morrall also sentenced Travis Patron to 30 days of ' incarceration for having violated the conditions of his release linked to another conviction received last October.

At the time, Travis Patron had also found guilty by a jury in the Court of King's Bench in Saskatchewan of making hateful remarks against the Jewish community.

Taking into account the time he has already spent in incarceration, he will have to spend 15 days behind bars.

In connection with the harassment accusations, Travis Patron, who represented himself, argued that he should not be convicted by referring to several federal laws, in addition to citing several passages from the Bible to build his argument.

He claims that the man and his girlfriend broke laws by acting in a crude, disrespectful and dishonorable manner in a public space.

In court Friday, Crown prosecutor Lana Morelli read a testimony from the girlfriend of the RCMP officer.

It is difficult to demonstrate to the court this which is not perceptible in the video [of Travis Patron during the incident], that is to say his gaze. He looked at the one I love with eyes filled with pure hatred, the victim testified in writing.

She fears that he risks endangering the population if he takes action in connection with his racist beliefs.

As part of the sentencing, Judge John Morrall barred Travis Patron from going to the Midtown Mall. The magistrate also ruled that even if he did not use racist insults, his comments were openly racist.

Rehabilitation is not something to consider in this case unfortunately, considering that [Travis Patron maintains] his racist ideology, notes John Morrall.
