France – Brazil: Worrying Blues ahead of the 2024 Olympics

At the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Lille, the French team, led by its star Wembanyama, starts the 2024 Olympics against Brazil on Saturday, July 27.

Olympic vice-champion four years ago, the French team is moving forward in its competition with too much doubt. During the preparation before this major event, Vincent Collet's team lined up defeats: four in six games, including four defeats in a row in the space of thirteen days against Australia, Canada, Serbia and Germany.

&Following a pitiful result in the last World Cup (18th place!), the Blues are clearly not in the desired rhythm as they tackle the 2024 Olympics. Several observers are pointing out a weakness in the playmaker position in particular. A former starter in this sector within the blue house, Laurent Sciarra was very critical: "I don't see much improvement over the last two or three years. However, we have a coach who didn't have a club this year, unlike other years, so he had time to see the guys (…). We don't have a playmaker to play at this level, to play at the very high level we don't have a playmaker.” The interested party regretted in particular the absence of Thomas Heurtel, ineligible for selection due to his choice to play in Russia despite the ethical charter set up by its federation. “This position has been my life for 20 years, you don't always have Thomas Heurtels. They wanted to make it a political affair and we're shooting ourselves in the foot.”

Despite the upheavals, NBA star Victor Wembanyama reassured French fans: “Are we ready? ? We will be ready. There is really no need to worry. We have chosen to have a tough preparation. What is very positive is that we have a lot of room for improvement. I am not worried at all and I know that we will be ready on D-Day (…). Personally, I feel good. I'm trying to adapt to my role as quickly as possible. We all get along well, both on and off the pitch, and we have the tools to sort out any small tactical issues. That's what we're going to do.”

&In Villeneuve d'Ascq, the Pierre-Mauroy stadium, usually occupied by the Lille football club, has been transformed into a basketball arena to host this France – Brazil match. Kick-off will take place at 5:15 p.m.
