The Guardians of Thau demonstrated this Saturday, December 14 in the morning in front of the town hall of Sète to protest against the fate of the environmental activist and founder of Sea Shepherd, Paul Watson. A great defender of whales and involved in the fight against their hunting, which remains legal in three countries in the world, he was arrested in July 2024 in Greenland, a Danish territory, on the basis of an international arrest warrant issued against him by Japan, which accuses him of having injured whaling personnel in 2010. The decision concerning his extradition by the Danish courts to Greenland is expected this Wednesday, December 18.

“Saving whales is not a crime”

“Seeing nothing coming to the Thau basin, while dozens of cities in France have shown their support, such as Paris, Montpellier and even La Grande-Motte, we have decided to take this initiative”, indicates Josiane Amarger, president of the Gardiens de Thau. “Free Paul Watson!”, chanted the participants, displaying slogans such as “saving whales is not a crime”.

Letter sent to the mayor of Sète

Alongside activists from the Sea Shepherd France branch in Montpellier and the Sète animalist collective in Thau, they sent a letter to the mayor of Sète asking him “to publicly support Paul Watson and show his opposition to whaling”, continues Josiane Amarger. “Sète is still a city that lives from the sea, that has a strong link with cetaceans, it is even the emblem of the city's coat of arms and its etymology. We talk about defending marine biodiversity, but here we have no proof.” The city of Paris made Paul Watson an honorary citizen of the City. The organizers invited passers-by to sign petitions.
