Freebox v9: Free reveals a date and (some) images

We must therefore remember the date in the calendar: Free will unveil a major new feature on January 30, so in just 5 days. The information came from Xavier Niel's 𝕏 account, before being confirmed by a tweet from the official Free account, with the following caption: “Ready for a new banger ? See you on January 30“. A banger, in English, is a slang word meaning “success” or “best-seller”.

In an email received by some of our colleagues, Free specifies that the presentation will take place at 10 a.m. At this stage, there is actually little doubt about what Free is preparing for its customers: the operator is preparing to launch its highly anticipated Freebox v9. A new version of its box – a priori the most high-end – which was initially expected to be released at the end of 2023.

This new Freebox must therefore a priori follow in the footsteps of the Freebox Revolution (which remains to this day the most flexible and configurable box on the market) and the Freebox Delta – which for its part received a fairly mixed reception from customers, in particular because of its high price. For now, however, we know very little about this new iteration.

As several of our colleagues point out, statements from operator executives point to compatibility with the WiFi 7 – and undoubtedly a new subscription offer including access to streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Beyond that, flow rates could still increase, with – maybe – the arrival of 10G EPON fiber. And maybe even new synergies with Free Mobile.

Even if this remains entirely hypothetical at this stage. Another point to discover on January 30: what Free will offer on the TV player side. This is one of the most important points on high-end internet boxes and on the latest generation, the firm had focused on a partnership with the French hifi audio equipment manufacturer Devialet. Without, however, being able to convince all customers to pay extra for this.

In any case, Free promises something never before seen, and we can't wait to discover the future that the internet access provider imagines for its most high-end residential access. Response in a little less than a week! Incidentally, the teasing of the box taken up by the accounts @Free and @Xavier75 reveals a first glimpse of the design of the device.
