Google, TikTok, Amazon, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat, to name just a few. These major services occupy an essential place in our daily lives. To gain more clarity, Arcom has just published a study from its Online Platforms Observatory. This survey reveals some interesting facts about the activities of 12-17 year-olds.
TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and… Pornhub
The web policeman indicates in particular that 12-17 year-olds spent 116 hours and 25 minutes online in June 2024. TikTok and Snapchat alone account for the majority of this total, or 78 hours on average. The podium is logically completed by YouTube and Instagram (10 hours each).
These figures are impressive to say the least and should fuel the public debate on limiting screen time among young people. We also know that this is one of Emmanuel Macron's hobby horses, even if he lost the initiative following the changes in political balance in the National Assembly.
Another lesson from this study is that underage Internet users spend time watching pornographic content that is theoretically forbidden to them. 40% of members of this age group visited one of these portals during the month observed. Arcom states on this subject: “The rate of use of Pornhub among 12-17 year olds (33%) is higher than its rate of use among adults”. A third of the audience of this site is aged 12 to 25.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000As France and the European Union seek to force major porn sites to check the age of users to protect the youngest, this information should not go unnoticed. We also know that the use of bank cards to prove the age of the user is considered as a temporary solution as we previously discussed in this article.
The platforms studied
Here is the list of VLOPSEs (very large online platforms and search engines) that served as the basis for this study, as the European Commission classifies them: AliExpress, Amazon Store, App Store, Pornhub, Booking.com, Google Search, Google Play, Google Maps, Google Shopping, YouTube, Shein, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Bing, XNXX, Pinterest, Snapchat, Stripchat, TikTok, X, Temu, XVideos, Wikipedia, and Zalando.
Key takeaways:
- 12-17 year-olds spend more than a hundred hours 115 hours per month online
- TikTok and Snapchat capture most of minors' attention span
- These young Internet users also massively consume pornographic content
