From Jean-Jaurès to Quai Voltaire, the town of Frontignan is taking care of its city centre and giving itself a new look

Spread the love

A glimpse of the urban horizon that is promised in the heart of the city of Frontignan.

Since Tuesday, January 21, residents of Place Jean-Jaurès and the surrounding streets have been witnessing a ballet of excavators and public works vehicles. The year will also see other construction sites, including the one called the redevelopment of Quai Voltaire with its new developments that will be finalized in the spring.

The town of Frontignan is taking care of its city centre. Since Tuesday 21 January, residents of Place Jean-Jaurès and the surrounding streets have been witnessing a ballet of excavators and public works vehicles. The staff of the town hall and service companies are recognisable by their fluorescent orange clothing. “The work has started. We have no choice, it has to happen,” comments this seafood seller soberly. She doesn't know if this urban construction site of Jean-Jaurès and the town hall square will penalize her business.

“We're going to have to move the car”

Same expectation at this fruit and vegetable seller. “We don't know what it's going to give. Already there, we see that there are no more cars parking.” On the counter of this café, the waitress warns a customer. “You're going to have to go move your car.”The municipal police are on the ground to talk to users and especially motorists. This means that this upheaval will not cause some disruption for local residents and especially shopkeepers.

Car traffic impacted

The Frontignan town hall wants to be reassuring: “During the entire construction site, car traffic will be impacted but maintained in order to facilitate the activity of shopkeepers and the daily lives of residents.”

This so-called redevelopment project will take place in three phases. The first, currently being launched, will last until February 15. The parking spaces on Rue du Port are being removed to allow passage for construction trucks. The second phase of the work will take place from the end of February to mid-April. The third stage will take place from mid-September to the end of November 2025. Then, in the fall of 2026, it will be time to move on to the last and final phase of the project.

A co-built project

As Frédéric Aloy, municipal councilor delegated to urban planning, would say, the deployment of this new urban plan is the result of consultation between the municipality and the residents of a city center where “public space is better shared”. The purpose of this major operation is to promote soft mobility and boost commercial and economic activity in the city center.

Street beautification

“The long-awaited rehabilitation of our city centre is progressing and is illustrated today by the beautification of the streets Saint-Paul, Baumelle, Porte de Montpellier and Place Combette”, said the mayor of Frontignan, Michel Arrouy, during his New Year's greetings to the population on Saturday, January 11. As a reminder, the year 2025 will result in other projects, such as the one called the redevelopment of the Quai Voltaire with its new developments that will be finalized in the spring.

Cars and biodiversity

Are we heading towards a car-free city centre? ? This is the trend that is emerging through the new developments in the heart of the city in Frotignan. This future configuration, which should melt the carbon footprint, promises a new and short-term horizon for local residents and users on foot or on two wheels. Biodiversity is the winner. The town hall of Frontignan is committed to making more room for vegetation. With the reduction in the influence of cars, the heart of the city will beat to the rhythm of pedestrian walks made safe by new uses of public roads. What is true of the transformation, even the modernization of Place Jean-Jaurès is also true of Rue de l’Hôtel de Ville. The Muscat city is thus promised a “60~em>”sustainable future", as Mayor Michel Arrouy likes to say. The councilor never ceases to reiterate his determination to improve the living environment of its fellow citizens and the beautification of its town.

“Temporary nuisances”

There is also the creation of a promenade going from the Aresquiers woods through the old salt marshes while joining the Voltaire quay, then taking the towpath to La Peyrade. For the Frontignan community, such an ambition is well worth some sacrifices. It happens that the new infrastructures currently being built are a source of “temporary nuisances” they specify at the town hall.
