Winter is coming and with it its share of new regulations. From today until March 31, 2025, a major change awaits French drivers with the end of tolerance for certain types of tires in mountainous areas.
This development of the Mountain Law now imposes stricter standards for winter road safety.

The Mountain Law is not new. For several years, it has required motorists to equip their vehicles with winter tires or anti-skid devices in 34 French departments (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Massif Jura, Pyrenees and Massif Vosges).
But until now, all-season tires marked M+S (Mud and Snow) were sufficient. This flexibility is completely disappearing today.
The new standard is called 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake). This acronym, represented by a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake, is not just a simple logo.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000It guarantees that the tires have passed rigorous laboratory tests to prove their effectiveness on snow and ice. A major difference with the M+S which did not meet any precise performance standards.
The authorities are not joking with this new regulation. A driver caught red-handed with non-compliant tires is liable to a fine of 135 euros.
Even more serious, the vehicle can be immobilized immediately. A particularly problematic situation in mountainous areas, especially during the winter period.
The tire market is currently seeing a flourishing of attractive offers on M+S models. These promotions, which appear attractive, are only so in regions that are not affected by harsh winters. Drivers must therefore remain vigilant and choose equipment bearing the 3PMSF marking, even if they cost a little more.
