Funeral of Maïté: the moving speech of one of her granddaughters for a final farewell

For the past year, she lived in a nursing home. According to the Actu Landes website, the famous chef suffered from a “neurodegenerative disease”.

On the night of Friday 20 to Saturday 21 December 2024, Maïté died at the age of 86 in Rion-des-Landes, in the Landes. In shock, Laurent Civel, the mayor of this town, had declared the next day on BFMTV: “À every time there was a song, someone who sang at the EPHAD, then automatically, Maïté took the chorus, and with her stentorian voice, created a crazy atmosphere. All the inhabitants of my commune mourn the disappearance of this great lady”.

Thursday, December 26, 2024, the Maïté's funeral took place in Rion-des-Landes. As Sud-Ouest reported, about 300 people were present to pay tribute to her. Jean-Claude Sire, program director for France 3 Aquitaine from 1986 to 2000, said: “Dear Maïté, you will be able to invest the kitchens of paradise. The angels will feast. We will miss you. It is absolutely impossible that we forget you”.

If her husband Jean-Pierre Ordonez, died in 2020 and her only son Serge, died in 2013, Maïté was able to count on the presence of her two granddaughters, Perrine and Camille, to pay tribute to her. Émoved, Perrine, the eldest, declared during the ceremony: She cooked to cheer us up. I am so grateful to have been with you. Eat, sing and drink in her honor”.

Rain of tributes for Maïté

Saturday, December 21, 2024, for Le Parisien, Philippe Etchebest, who made his first appearance on television in 1996 alongside Maïté, had expressed his émotion upon learning of her passing. She was an extremely caring person. I remember this little anecdote where, to lighten the mood, she started singing backstage and I accompanied her. It was an extraordinary moment. And she sang as well as she cooked! She was quite a figure, Maïté”, he confided.

On Instagram, it was with emotion that Cyril Lignac also paid tribute to him. “What a joy to have shared all these moments with you! Your good humor, your good cooking that we shared at your place with my parents, I will never forget”, he wrote. On X (ex-Twitter), Emmanuel Macron shared as for him: Ambassador of our traditional cuisine, popular icon, source of inspiration for so many familiess, Maïté, who embodied so well the art of being French, is no more. I extend my condolences to her family, her loved ones and to all those who enjoyed listening to her”.
