Samsung Galaxy S smartphones are traditionally the manufacturer's most premium. For some time now, Samsung has even decided to eliminate the Note series to merge it with the most premium model, sold under the name Samsung Galaxy Ultra.

This year we find the same number of models as last year:

  • Galaxy S24
  • Galaxy S24+
  • Galaxy S24 Ultra

The first two models essentially see their design evolve marginally, but without doubt the biggest new features are to be found on the Ultra model. Samsung has given it a titanium finish, unlike any other smartphone on the market so far (at least in the Android ecosystem).

The model features a flat-edged display, as well as a new set of ultra-premium 50MP photo sensors, including a sensor with a particularly large 1-inch surface area in a smartphone; it is in fact larger than the largest sensor integrated by Apple on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

But it is above all the AI-boosted features that are the big news across the range this year. Samsung and Google are indeed rolling out a lot of new things, such as call transcription by a synthetic interpreter, generative image editing, numerous generative text manipulation functions and much more.

This generation marks the return of Exynos chips designed in-house, on the S24 and S24+ models – while the latest chip available from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with more power and less energy consumption, is offered on the S24 Ultra.

In any case, the firm assures that it has strengthened its energy dissipation solution. We have a 1.5x larger vapor chamber on the S24, 1.6x larger on the S24+ and 1.9x larger on the S24 Ultra.

On the autonomy side, Samsung is integrating an improved battery this year with increased energy density. Samsung thus manages to offer a capacity of 5,000 mAh on the Ultra model while the S24+ gets 4,900 mAh and the S24 inherits 4,000 mAh.

The result is, according to Samsung, a gain in autonomy of between 3.5 h and 4.5 h on all models. Note that these smartphones are now guaranteed for 7 years for updates, like the Google Pixel 8 or the iPhone.

This is probably the point where the software part is immediately more interesting than the hardware part. Between the S23 generation and the S24 generation, there is ultimately little significant change. With one exception: the S24 Ultra model.

We still find a 200 Mp main sensor. But one of the telephoto lenses goes to 50 Mp. Samsung explains that the optical zoom is now better, because it is full sensor between 3x and 5x. At 2x and 10x, AI does the rest to deliver “optical quality”.

Beyond that, the S24 Ultra takes better photos in low light. And 8K video at 30 frames per second is widespread across the range. A feature also available in 5x zoom on the S24 Ultra. This model also benefits from the 4K/120 IPS Video Pro mode.

In addition, Samsung explains that it has collaborated with Android, Meta, Snapchat and TikTok to optimize the quality of photos and videos intended for sharing on social networks. The apps will be able to use all the features of the latest sensors, which is a first for an Android smartphone manufacturer.

Beyond that, Galaxy AI, which we will come back to, suggests local edits for your photos in Gallery, and allows you to make generative edits right away.

The design has changed marginally this year, including on the Ultra model, which looks very much like an S23 Ultra. However, it has three new features. First, a Titanium finish, which is 56% more resistant. Then, a completely flat screen for greater strength. But also thinner edges.

The S24 and S24+ have thinner edges and more rounded corners. The rest remains almost unchanged.

The strong point of Samsung's S24 series is the integration of its artificial intelligence capabilities, called “Galaxy AI”. These features, enabled by advances in next-generation mobile processors, are initially exclusive to the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra.

However, a future update is expected to extend Galaxy AI to all S23s and the Tab S9 tablets. Details on the performance differences between these generations remain unknown.

One of the most impressive features is the instant translation of calls and messages. Imagine calling someone in Seoul who only speaks Korean: the translation happens in real time, providing a seamless interpretation experience thanks to AI. Our tests confirm the #8217;effectiveness of this feature.

An innovative messaging assistant is also present, allowing you to change the style or add emojis to your SMS. In addition, Google brings its Gemini model, integrating a search by selection functionality executed locally. Simply select a part of an image or text (simply surround it with your finger) to launch an associated Google search.

The Web Assistant offers to condense articles and web pages into a summary that can be accessed with a single click. Another tool, the Transcription Assistant via the Voice Memos app, recognizes up to ten different voices in a conversation, converts the recordings to text and provides a summary. This feature also includes a translation option, all processed locally to ensure data confidentiality.

Finally, the Notes Assistant optimizes your note-taking by restructuring and synthesizing it.
