The Olympics have just ended, they have made you want to take up sport ? You are looking for a connected, comfortable, durable and independent watch, capable of accompanying your Samsung smartphone& nbsp;? It would then be logical to turn to the Galaxy Watch7, the latest, which has all the basic equipment.

More expensive, but also more powerful, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is catching your eye ? Let's see together in this test if you should crack.

Buying a Galaxy Watch Ultra is not a trivial choice. With a retail price set at €699, we can legitimately wonder if this 47 mm technological gem deserves to be on our wrist.

An ultra-premium technical sheet

Looking at the Galaxy Watch Ultra's spec sheet, everything seems to come together to please you. Samsung has opted for a titanium chassis and a “Super AMOLED” screen with a resolution of 480,480 pixels.

In terms of brightness, it's a masterstroke with a peak at 3000 nits. Called “Ultra”, the watch can go with you anywhere. It is waterproof up to 50 meters deep and IP6X certified (dust and shock resistant).

While its size may be scary (47.4 x 47.1 x 12.1 mm), the watch is not that imposing. It does not stand out, even on the thinnest wrists.

The same cannot be said for its weight. You will have to make do with the 60.5 g of the watch alone (without strap): it is not the lightest model on the market, but it is a little better than the Apple Watch Ultra (61.4 g and 61.5 g for the second generation).

A complete ecosystem

The name and technical sheet of the Galaxy Watch Ultra are obviously reminiscent of the Apple Watch Ultra. But the integration into the ecosystem is also reminiscent of Apple. Indeed, the watch fits perfectly into the Samsung product range.

The connection to the smartphone is very natural and the data is easy to access, especially with the Health application. Samsung does not have to be ashamed of the comparison with Apple on this point, although Apple has remained the reference in this field for years.

Like its rival, Samsung's Watch Ultra acts like a second screen. It displays notifications, lets you respond to messages, calls, or even start workouts. It's also possible to download third-party apps, such as Strava, Spotify, or Swim. A very good point when you know that Garmin has always refused to open its watches to third-party apps.

A Galaxy Watch Ultra for doing sports: a good idea?

Why use a Galaxy Watch Ultra instead of a Series 7 ? Certainly for sports, you might say ? In this area, does the Watch Ultra compete with the other big names in the sector ? Many sports brands already offer lightweight, durable and sporty watches to accompany us (hello Garmin), so why should we turn to Samsung ?

In reality, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is neither a great nor a bad solution. If you already have a premium smartwatch, the gain will be marginal (for the sports part).

On the other hand, if you still have a bare wrist, turning first to a watch like the Galaxy Watch Ultra can be extreme. Unless you are already part of the accomplished athletes.

In this case, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is a device capable of tracking your sports sessions accurately, recording the data that matters, while continuing to follow you throughout the day.

Sportingly: it is (probably) better than you

As we wrote above, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is a very good choice for athletes. The watch is capable of tracking runners, cyclists, swimmers and dozens of other sports. There is even a “multi-sport” mode. which will delight triathletes.

Finally his sporting limits do exist, but they are greater than the capabilities of 90% of the population (to say the least).

Samsung's Watch Ultra is a goldsmith's product, it has the best sensors. For GPS we find an L1+L5 system. During our test, it was always very precise, both for nature runs and on an athletics track.

Even in the pool, a weak point of most connected watches, it does very well and recognizes the different strokes. It counts lengths quite well, even in a dense environment, with stops and detours to go from one end of the pool to the other.

Battery life: this nasty flaw

As you will have understood, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is a very good connected watch. It can follow us in everyday life as well as during our workouts . But a shadow darkens the picture. Like its competitor, the Galaxy Watch Ultra suffers from limited battery life.

While Samsung promises 48 hours of use between charges, you shouldn't rush it too much to get there. In our test, the watch instead displayed “low battery” after 36 hours. And then the trouble really begin.

Because having a limited autonomy has never bothered me, if the recharge is fast enough. But here, Samsung offers us an average autonomy and a recharge… to be reviewed.

It is indeed necessary to count 90 long minutes for a correct charge (0-80%) and more than 2 hours to reach 100%. It's way too much.

A 22-hour smartwatch

This lack of autonomy really complicates the use of the smartwatch. By “only” working for 36 hours at a time, I often found myself with a discharged watch in the middle of the night. How to use the very good sleep analysis functionality with such autonomy ?

The Galaxy Watch Ultra, like all smartwatches, is designed to work 24 hours a day on our wrist. But in reality, it is incapable of doing so. You always have to sacrifice part of your day to put it on its magnetic charger. It only lasts an hour or two, but this routine doesn't really coincide with a watch designed for demanding and adventurous athletes.

Why buy a Galaxy Watch Ultra ?

You are a confirmed athlete and you want a connected watch linked to your Samsung smartphone ? Go for the Galaxy Watch Ultra with your eyes closed. If you remember to charge it, you will never be disappointed.

If you are not necessarily looking to make the link between your smartphone and your watch, other solutions are available to you. Specialized brands like Garmin, Polar or Suunto offer very good products, in the same price range.

Finally for beginner athletes who already have a Samsung smartphone, the Watch Ultra is not necessarily the wisest choice. This is like driving a Ferrari at 30 km/h: it's very pleasant, but the product is not designed for this use.

The Watch Series 7 can then become an interesting alternative, to benefit from the Samsung ecosystem at a more accessible price.
