In terms of intelligence, Gemini has almost nothing to envy ChatGPT. But in addition to that, Google is able to offer, on its chatbot, features that do not exist on ChatGPT. Indeed, the Mountain View firm has developed a system of extensions that allows Gemini to associate with other Google products or services. For example, thanks to the Google Workspace extension, Gemini is able to find emails or files from Google Drive in response to the user's prompts.

A Google Home extension to control the home

And currently, Google is also working on a Gemini extension for Google Home, which will allow the ChatGPT competitor to be used to control connected devices in the home. These features are already offered on Google Assistant. But the advantage of Gemini is that, thanks to the large language models, it is able to have more fluid and natural interactions with the user. The Google Home extension allows Gemini to control lights, sockets, or thermostats, as well as some devices such as vacuum cleaners, coffee machines, etc.

Unfortunately, the Google Home extension for Gemini is still only available in English. And to use it, the user will also have to register on the Google Home preview, which allows to test the new features before everyone else. But in any case, thanks to this extension, which should be deployed gradually, Gemini is increasingly capable of replacing Google Assistant on Android smartphones.

Coming Soon: A New Way to Control Your Smartphone

In addition, later on, Gemini should also be able to control some features of your smartphone. In August, Google announced the development of a Gemini extension for “Utilities”. According to the company's explanation, it is a “group of applications that control the functions of your device, such as the clock (timers and alarms), media control and device actions (flashlight, volume, wifi, Bluetooth, etc.).”

  • Through its extension system, Google is constantly adding new features, linked to its other products and services to Gemini
  • Currently, Google is testing a Google Home extension that allows you to use its ChatGPT competitor to control connected devices in the home, such as lighting, smart plugs, or the vacuum cleaner
  • Google is also developing a “Utilities” extension for Gemini, which will allow it to control certain functions of Android smartphones
