A discreet but strategic player. Based in Aveyron, the company GID Lacaune (Gènes Innovation Diffusion Lacaune) held its general meeting this Thursday, February 4. The company occupies a key place in the sheep industry. Specializing in the genetic selection of Lacaune ewes, it collaborates with many breeders to improve key characteristics such as milk productivity, fertility and disease resistance. For information purposes, in one year, the number of member breeders has increased from 383 in 2023 to 411 in 2024.

Within the company, the emphasis is on breeding female ewes, whose performance determines the profitability of the farms. “We have a strong demand”, confirms Philippe Boudou, president of the producers and breeders organization. Today, part of the activity of GID Lacaune consists of the sale of milk breeders, particularly abroad. Like in Greece where Fêta AOP is made from sheep's milk. “But also in Spain or Italy, explains the president. Mediterranean countries are major consumers of sheep's milk.”

Optimizing genetic quality ?

Another string to its bow, GID Lacaune implements research programs aimed at optimizing genetic quality. Stated objective: more robust herds, adapted to current economic and environmental constraints.

In short, behind the emblematic image of the locally well-known Roquefort, GID Lacaune acts behind the scenes. The company wishes to guarantee, through its areas of work, a supply of quality milk. Its role contributes to the agricultural dynamics of the Aveyron region. From genetic selection to international markets, GID Lacaune confirms its desire to be a sustainable player in the sheep sector.
