IN BRIEF

  • On October 9, a ruling relayed by AFP indicates that Gilbert Montagn&eacute and Didier Barbelivien are accused of plagiarism for the song 'On va s'aimer', allegedly copied from a work by Gianni Nazzaro from the 70s.
  • Montagné's lawyer mentions an ongoing assessment in Italy, while Barbelivien invites the public to compare the two songs to form an opinion.
  • Despite the controversy, Montagné enjoys the support of his local community, who want him to continue sing in peace.

“We're going to love each other/&To touch the sky/To separate / &To burn our wings/To find each other/Like swallows…” Memories flood back into the memory when reading the lyrics of We're going to love each other. The hit composed by the talented Didier Barbelivien in 1980 is one of the greatest successes in Gilbert Montagné's repertoire.

A decision dated October 9, and relayed by AFP, however, reports that the two artists “as well as the Universal companies cannot benefit from the revenues generated by the infringing workOn va s’aimer“. The singer's hit would be a plagiarism of a song performed in the 70s by the Italian Gianni Nazzaro, Une fille de France, on a text by the same Didier Barbelivien.

Gilbert Montagné accused plagiarism: what does his entourage say about it ?

At the AFP, Gilbert Montagné's lawyer, Me Gilles- William Goldnadel informs that an “expertise is underway in Italy”. Didier Barbelivien leaves as to à his choice “&to all those who wish to listen to the two works to form their own opinion. If you listen to both, you will fall out of the closet”.

What about the main interested party ? The interpreter of Under the sunlights of the tropics walls himself in silence. The case that targets him has brutally put an end to the promotional tour for his new album, We sing! We dance! with Gilbert Montagné. The singer protects himself from the media agitation in his second home in Donjon, a peaceful town located in the Allier department.

Gilbert Montagné : this unexpected support received by the singer

In Saint-Léon, where his grandmother lived, the singer who is celebrating his 73rd birthday today can count on a solid community of fans. “Frankly, he doesn't deserve what's happening to him, says a local – and benevolent – merchant approached by our colleagues at PurePeople. Gilbert is the artist who always has his hand on his heart. Let him be and let him sing his song as he hears it !”.

On the Donjon town hall side, “discretion remains the order of the day”, our colleagues note. “We haven't seen him in the village for some time, but we are all behind him in the ordeal he is going through”, says a restaurateur. We haven't seen him in the village for some time, but we're all behind him in the ordeal he's going through.” Case to be continued…
