Gladiator 2: We saw it before its release, the film will divide fans

C'est ce mercredi 13 novembre que la suite de Gladiator sort au cinéma. Nous avons pu le voir avant sa sortie, voici notre avis.

Twenty-four years later, the Coliseum reopens its doors to movie theaters. This Wednesday, November 13, French spectators can finally discover Gladiator 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott's acclaimed feature film. Here, it is not the story of the deceased Maximus (Russell Crowe) that is told, but that of his son, Lucius. Twenty years after the death of Marcus Aurelius' successor in the arena, Lucilia's child who fled Rome is forced to return to the heart of the city plagued by corruption and political plots, in order to redeem his freedom as a gladiator.

In this sequel, which takes place about twenty years after the first episode, it is the adventures of Lucius, son of Lucilia and Maximus (as confirmed by Ridley Scott), which will be told by the British filmmaker, who returns for the occasion behind the camera. Gladiator 2 was one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year. First thanks to ' its casting, which brings together stars from the small screen (actors seen in The Last of Us, Normal People or Stranger Things) to Hollywood bigwigs like Denzel Washington, but also to bring back to life the characters played in the first film by Connie Nielsen (Lucilla) and Djimon Hounsou (Juba). The film, which we saw before its release, nevertheless promises to divide fans: those looking for a big spectacle film will be delighted, while those hoping to find the soul of the first could be disappointed. Our opinion on Gladiator 2

Making a sequel to a five-time Oscar-winning epic, a critical and popular success ($450 million in revenue), less than 30 years after its release: the bet was daring from the start, and only Ridley Scott could have wanted to take on it. With Gladiator 2, the British filmmaker nevertheless manages to sign a film that is resolutely epic, spectacular and very entertaining.

But amidst the many fight scenes that keep the viewer on the edge of their seats, Gladiator 2 is above all an intriguing political film, which becomes much more complex when it moves away from the arena to focus on the portrait of Rome corrupted by emperors sick of power and the political machinations that take place within the court. In the role of the manipulator Macrinus, the charismatic Denzel Washington soars through the film and steals the show. a protagonist unfortunately erased from his own story.

But this sequel constantly seems crushed by the weight of the original film, and that is one of its biggest flaws. Gladiatoroozes from every pore of the feature film: whether it is the theme of Hans Zimmer, which returns regularly throughout the film until its final scene, or the question of the overwhelming legacy of Maximus, Marcus Aurelius and Lucilla, from which neither the hero nor the viewer seem able to free themselves. A tribute, certainly, which sounds above all like an admission of weakness so omnipresent is it.

Gladiator 2 is certainly impressive and worth the detour for its epic breath and its action scenes (despite sometimes dubious special effects and an indigestible overkill), but it never manages to reach the emotion that had transported the spectators of the first episode. The comparison is not only inevitable, but above all unfavorable to the sequel, which never really rises & the height of the cult peplum.

Synopsis – This sequel to the film Gladiator follows the story of Lucius, son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus. Admiring Maximus's journey, he decides to follow in his footsteps.

Rate this movie JLM47 – 11/12/2024 Report More violence! Cricri – 11/12/2024 Report An interesting movie that is taken out of context with an appearance of sharks and monkeys from “Jaws and the Planet of the Apes”. Too bad. The main character is a bit diluted in this movie. Like a feeling of déjà vu, too bad. No suspense in reality. Omar dz – 11/12/2024 Report Gladiator I set the bar so high that making such a good sequel was almost impossible. But I still expected better, much better compared to the budget allocated and the actors at the forefront.
The special effects and especially the shark scene were a failure. The film lacks soul and the scrolling of scenes lacked fluidity BIAIM – 11/12/2024 Report A film that does not live up to expectations. I find that the scenario and the development of the relationships between the characters were rushed. I find that Lucius' relationship with his mother quickly changed, I'm stuck on that, I don't know if I'm the only one who feels that way. Raf – 11/12/2024 Report Gross historical errors. A historian covers his ears and hides his eyes. Just a film with good special effects and very American. Nothing more.
