Already in 2017, the American giant Google launched a buyout procedure concerning the Taiwanese brand HTC (for 1.1 billion dollars), which in reality constituted a form of partnership to strengthen its mobile division, HTC having no intention of disappearing at the time. Today, this same Google, eager not to be left behind by Apple or Meta in the mixed reality market, has just bought part of the teams of this same HTC, which works on a certain HTC Vive.

Google buys (again) the services of HTC

A new deal worth 250 million dollars, which will therefore allow Google to benefit from all the expertise of various HTC engineers within its own teams. Added to this is the possibility for the American giant to exploit some of the many technologies developed by HTC regarding VR/AR.

Today, we signed an agreement to bring a portion of the HTC VIVE engineering team to Google, subject to customary closing conditions. This is an incredibly strong technical team with a proven track record in VR, and we look forward to working with them to accelerate the development of the Android XR platform across the headset and glasses ecosystem” Google said in a (short) blog post.

For Google, it is of course a question of boosting its brand new Android XR, made official at the end of last year. A mixed reality strategy developed with another renowned partner, namely a certain Samsung. With Android XR, Google wants to offer a dedicated ecosystem that is both open and efficient, to allow as many manufacturers as possible to develop their own devices.

De For its part, HTC wants to be reassuring, indicating that this new operation does not signal the end of the group's Vive division, and that the various products already available on the market will continue to be supported by the brand.

Like the battle between Android and iOS in the mobile market, Android XR will be one of the main competitors of visionOS, the Vision Pro operating system, but also of the Meta group's mixed reality platform.
