The day after Donald Trump's inauguration, the American artificial intelligence (AI) sector is in full swing. After the announcement of the Stargate project for $500 billion, Google is investing a large sum in Anthropic, the startup that operates the conversational agent Claude.
Google and Amazon are banking on Anthropic
The Redmond firm is investing an additional $1 billion in the young company founded by former OpenAI employees, bringing its total funding to $2 billion. The two companies also established a commercial agreement that covers the use of a series of online tools and services.
By increasing its stake in Anthropic, Google is positioning itself to further compete with other Silicon Valley giants in the highly competitive sector of generative AI.
For its part, Anthropic is starting to weigh heavily in the sector, because Google's investment is added to a total of $8 billion injected by Amazon into the latter. Moreover, the e-commerce giant is basing itself on the startup's large language model to improve its Alexa voice assistant, according to specialized media.
The company is seeking to distinguish itself from its competitors by placing access to AI security. It is one of the first suppliers to have deployed an AI agent capable of managing computer systems. “Right now, I'm more confident than I've ever been that we're very close to powerful capabilities […]. AI systems that are better than almost any human at almost any task ,” Dario Amodei, the company's CEO, recently confided.

The AI sector is booming across the Atlantic
The timing of this investment is not random. With Donald Trump coming to power, the entire regulation of the technology industry will be turned upside down. Under the Biden administration, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a federal antitrust body, has launched an investigation into the funding of AI startups by tech giants.
An initiative that will most certainly be forgotten, as the Republican has promised to completely deregulate the AI sector. Despite everything, it will still be a while before the young shoots in the sector become profitable. Their expenses are currently too high and cannot be offset by the marketing of their products. Investors are nevertheless confident: the technology will eventually generate trillions of dollars in value, they estimate.
Analysts are more cautious, even speaking of an almost unprecedented speculative bubble.
