Google has just announced a series of new features for users of Gemini, its competitor to ChatGPT. And among these, there is the arrival of a new AI model. Indeed, the free version of Gemini, accessible on gemini.google.com, now uses the Gemini 1.5 “Flash” AI model. According to Google, thanks to this new model, the chatbot will be faster and will provide better quality answers. The firm mentions in particular significant improvements in reasoning and image understanding. In addition, thanks to Gemini 1.5 Flash, users of Google’s chatbot will also be able to have longer discussions with the AI.

In addition, Google will soon allow users of the free version to include files from Google Drive or their devices in conversations with the AI. This feature is currently reserved for users of the paid version of Gemini. With this update, Google seems to want to make Gemini more competitive, while for its part, OpenAI already offers its GPT-4o model for free, but with usage limits.

Gemini 1.5 Flash was presented in May, during the Google I/O conference.

Gemini arrives on the Android texting app

As you may already know, Google is trying to integrate generative AI into its products and services. The Android Messages app, which handles SMS and RCS, is no exception. Indeed, Google has developed a Gemini integration on this app, which allows the user to chat with the AI on it, instead of going to the Gemini app or its website. And Google has just announced the availability of this Gemini integration on Messages in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. “To get started, click on the ”Start a chat” button in Messages and select Gemini,” the company says.

Otherwise, Google has also just announced the availability of its Gemini chatbot for users under 18 years old. Teens who are the minimum age to have a Google account will therefore be able to use the chatbot. But Google nevertheless indicates that it is taking additional protective measures for teens.

  • Google has just announced a major update for the free version of Gemini, its competitor to ChatGPT
  • This free version now uses the Gemini 1.5 Flash AI model, which allows Gemini to be faster and more efficient
  • Gemini integration on the Android Messages app is also available in Europe
