Google Maps: You may lose your history if this setting is not made

Google Maps is making a big change and if you miss it, you risk losing your travel history. Here's how to avoid this situation.

Routes now stored locally

Some users of the GPS application are indeed receiving a message from Google warning them of changes to the your trips feature. Disabled by default, the latter allows you to create a personal map of your trips, by recording the places you have visited and the routes you have taken. You can therefore know where you have traveled on a specific date, but also find out the distance traveled as well as the mode of transport used.

Until now, the storage of this data was done via the cloud, but Google has decided to change this criterion for confidentiality reasons. The new version of the function, which is currently being deployed, records trips directly on the device locally. The Mountain View firm still requires its users' consent to do so, hence the email sent to notify them.

« If you decide to leave the Your Trips feature enabled, all your devices will record new visits in their own trips, including devices for which location history reporting was disabled », details the email consulted by our colleagues at Numerama.

If you are concerned, you have until September 15 to configure the settings of your Google Maps application on smartphone. « In the absence of action on your part, your visits and routes will be deleted, and the settings of Your trips will be deactivated », warns Google.

How to check if the feature is disabled in Google Maps ?

If you haven’t received an email, it means that you have already accepted this new setting, or that you are not affected by this change because the Your Trips feature is disabled on your device. To verify that this is the case, simply go to your Google Maps account settings and click on “ Your Trips ”.

It is also important to note that while the application stores the history of trips locally, it still offers the possibility of creating backups that can be saved to the cloud. These allow you to find old data in the event of a loss or change of smartphone.
