Google Pixel 2, OnePlus 5, Samsung Galaxy S10: when old smartphones benefit from Android 15 thanks to LineageOS

Today, Android smartphone manufacturers are trying to extend the lifespan of their devices by providing updates for a longer period of time. Google and Samsung, for example, offer 7 years of software updates for their latest premium smartphones. But a few years ago, it was common for a high-end smartphone to become obsolete just three years after its release. For example, the Google Pixel 2, released in 2017, stopped receiving security updates in 2020.

But the good news is that, thanks to an alternative to the operating systems provided by manufacturers, some older models can still enjoy an up-to-date version of Android. This alternative is called LineageOS and recently, it announced LineageOS 22.1, which is a version of its OS based on the code of Android 15. The list of devices compatible with this modified version of Android is long, but it includes very popular models, a few years ago, like the Pixel 2, the Pixel 2 XL, the Pixel 3, the Pixel 3a, the OnePlus 5, or even the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 from Samsung.

A faster deployment than expected

Besides the fact that it allows to have a recent version of Android on old smartphones, LineageOS also offers interesting customization experiences. Otherwise, in its announcement, LineageOS indicates that it was able to develop its version based on Android 15 faster than expected. And in addition, the developers were able to adapt LineageOS 22.1 to a maximum of devices more quickly.

“This year, we are ahead of schedule, thanks to the increase in the number of contributors, the renewed passion of others and the arrival of new project leaders”, we read in the announcement. The full list of compatible smartphones is available in the “source” of this article, below.
