A big smile can hide another. If you walked around Nîmes this summer, you might have come across Hanane (46 years old) and Nessrine (13 years old). Starting a mother/daughter business, many have dreamed of it, they did it. Based on an idea from Nessrine, “L'atelier Ness” was born in March 2024 and offers sensory jewelry that allows you to keep the scent of a loved one all day long. “A way to help children, adults and grandparents” for Nessrine. Hanane did not hesitate to launch the project, born from a much less sunny past.

Young girl with colorful dreams” according to her mother, Nessrine was the victim of daily school bullying. The smile gradually leaving her face, it was then difficult for her to return to school. “My daughter suffered serious school bullying in primary school. I wanted to work on her lost confidence by offering her workshops where she could give free rein to her ideas and realize them.” remembers Hanane. For Nessrine, the benefits were quickly felt: “It allowed me to regain the confidence that I had lost at school. When I was little, I always had my mother's t-shirt with me to feel protected. I thought that bracelets, with the smell of parents, would be great for children.”

A real life lesson

Both of them took advantage of the summer to go and canvass people in Nîmes and Montpellier. Above all, an exercise for Nessrine. “It's to allow Nessrine to open up. Today, people who meet her cannot imagine for a second all that she has undergone and how hard it was for her to speak because she manages to be so comfortable“, Hanane proudly says. “It's thanks to people and their reactions that I managed to open up little by little. I can express myself without being blocked.” It was in front of the arenas before Macklemore's concert in Nîmes that the project took on an even greater dimension with people's reactions. “We had great feedback!” enthuses Nessrine, who has discovered a second passion after sport. It was also an opportunity to get feedback and make changes to the products, in a field that they are both discovering.

Priority to sustainable development

Don't be fooled by her young age, Nessrine already has her head on her shoulders and is aware of the issues surrounding her. “We have a planet to respect! I don't see myself developing a project inspired by big brands like Shein and Amazon. I really wanted to work with small artisans that we sometimes see in reports. It's really good to highlight local workers.” A feeling shared by Hanane. Here is the Ness workshop associated with Botte Gardianne, which supplies it with leather scraps. “This allows me to guarantee the traceability of our items and reduce the carbon footprint. This collaborative model allows me to prove that it is possible to create items that are beautiful, functional and environmentally friendly, while stimulating the local economy“, Hanane rejoices.

The challenge was also significant for Hanane, a lawyer by profession. “I would never have imagined myself in this kind of project! But it's thanks to Nessrine. It's a great life lesson, it's great to see her open up to the world. I wanted to tell her that she's capable of great things. That she should go all the way and do what she likes.

“If it doesn't work, at least we'll have done it. I hope we'll be able to bring well-being to people. Whatever happens, the project will have succeeded in making me forget a little bit about the harassment I experienced. And that's already incredible.” As Nessrine prepares to start fourth grade, Hanane will continue to grow “l'atelier de Ness”, while keeping an eye on her partner and much more.
