Has Apple really abandoned the electric car ? Nothing is certain

For about ten years, rumors circulated about a project about the Apple Car project. Indeed, the Cupertino company would have formed a team to develop the technology necessary to allow it to market electric or even autonomous cars. But due to the many difficulties the company faced, Apple ultimately decided to abandon this project.

In February, Bloomberg published an article indicating that this decision would have been announced to the nearly 2,000 employees working on this project. The article also stated that Apple would have moved many people to its artificial intelligence projects. But is this the end of Apple's automotive projects ? Today, nothing is certain.

Indeed, an article recently published by Digitime, and relayed by 9to5Mac, suggests that instead of completely abandoning its ambitions in the automobile industry, Apple could simply change its strategy. Indeed, according to rumors, the firm is evaluating the possibility of working with a startup specializing in electric cars. And that startup could be Rivian. Instead of designing its own cars, the firm could exploit technologies that it has already developed through a partnership.

Of course, for the moment, this information should be considered with extreme caution. In addition, 9to5Mac explains that this is just speculation circulating at the supply chain level. In any case, the automobile would have allowed Apple to diversify its sources of income, to depend less on iPhone sales.

Otherwise, it should be remembered that one of Apple's smartphone rivals, Xiaomi, has managed to carve out a place for itself in the automobile market. In a few years, the Chinese manufacturer has managed to set up a unit specializing in electric cars, and to market its first models in China.

Alphabet, Google's parent company, is focusing on autonomous driving technology, through its subsidiary Waymo (formerly Google Car).
