In Toronto, the number of calls received daily by police relating to alleged hate crimes has jumped 132% since the attack of Hamas against Israel on October 7, said Police Chief Myron Demkiw.
The police had already announced a week ago a strengthening of security near synagogues and mosques, in particular, in the wake of the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel.
Police confirmed 14 hate crimes between October 7 and 9, compared to 5 cases during the same period last year and 1 case in 2021.
Police Chief Myron Demkiw said 12 of the cases earlier in October involved anti-Semitism, while the other two targeted Muslims.< /p>
The number of hate crimes recorded by police in Toronto from January 1 to October 7 this year stands at 237, added Chief Demkiw , compared to 192 last year.
Confirmed cases of mischief, death threats and criminal harassment [linked to hate crimes] are increasing in number, he said, promising to continue to fight against this trend.
