Eight years after losing his Miniature Pinscher while moving from Massachusetts to Arizona, Paul Guilbeault received an unexpected call: His dog, Damian, had been found.
In 2017, while stopping at a gas station in Oklahoma, Damian broke free of his leash and ran away. Paul, along with his father and a friend, had spent the entire night looking for him and had even stayed an extra week in the hope of finding him, putting up numerous posters.

“I kept looking, but the searches diminished over the years. Eventually, it got to the point where just seeing his poster gone hurt too much, and I didn't share it as often as I had in the beginning”, he confided to ABC News.
“It was devastating. That dog helped me get through a lot. […] I was everything to him, just like he was everything to me, and losing him was really, really hard.”
On January 15, while traveling to California to donate clothing and supplies to wildfire victims, Paul received several calls from an unknown number that he didn't know. Shortly after, a message caught his eye on his smartwatch.
“My Apple Watch gave me a little peek and said, 'Your dog, Damian, has been found.' And I thought, What the hell is this?”. At first skeptical, he asks his husband to call the number back and realizes that the news is real.
How was he found?
A motorist from Oklahoma City tells him that she almost ran over Damian, picked him up, then entrusted him to her brother, who took care of the dog before taking him to a veterinarian, reports the American media. By scanning his microchip, the vet discovered that he belonged to Paul Guilbeault.
Without hesitation, Paul and his husband hit the road and drove 14 hours to Oklahoma to meet Damian, who recognized them immediately.
Grateful for having his dog microchipped, he encourages all owners to do the same: “Microchip your pets! Microchip your dogs, your cats, even your birds can be microchipped.”
