“He started to act like a whore”: Alain Delon’s bitter memories of his first love and his unbridled youth

Before falling in love with Romy Schneider, Nathalie Delon or even Mireille Darc, Alain Delon first met the actress Brigitte Auber, who was her first love. A young unknown, he has recently returned from Indochina while she is already an actress with an extensive filmography. In an interview with Bernard Violet dating from 1999 and transcribed in the book, Brigitte Auber looks back on her relationship with the actor. From her beginnings, before the cinema, to her changing character, the actress evokes an Alain Delon who had not yet known success. “I told myself that she needed a more harsh, more physical, harder job. I find that acting is not very masculine”, remembers Brigitte Auber. The actress's fear ? That Alain Delon would become “a whore”. “I was afraid he would be eaten by this world, but at the same time, that was the only thing that interested her”.

She suggested to her partner the career of photographer, with the help of some contacts at Paris Match, but Alain Delon didn't seem very keen. “He wanted to be immediately brilliant and recognized”, remembers Brigitte Auber. Finally, the young man tried his hand at comedy and the verdict fell: “He is gifted as it is not allowed!”, says the actress's former teacher. It must be said that according to Brigitte Auber, Alain Delon – already at 20 years old – is endowed with a crazy charm. “When he smiles, when he is kind, he is formidable”, says the actress.

She remembers in particular a day when, with just his glibness, Alain Delon had managed to defuse a tense situation. “I saw him enter a living room where everyone was fighting, in short, a terrible atmosphere. He arrived, he started to act like a whore, to be charming with everyone, to laugh, to making humor, it was over: everyone was in a good mood, no one got angry anymore, it was paradise”. 

On the contrary, Brigitte Auber explains that Alain Delon could also be angry. The scapegoat of her partner on several occasions, the actress had to endure many of his mood swings. “One day, he got crazy because I honked at him in the street. He was in front of me. He didn't like it”, the actress remembers. A cyclothymic temperament mentioned by several people close to the Leopard.
