This man in his forties, a trail enthusiast “apparently seasoned”, was discovered dead by the high mountain gendarmerie platoon (PGHM) around 6pm on a “very steep” siteof the territory of the Pyrenean commune of Arignac (Ariège), the duty officer of the gendarmerie group told AFP.

The death seems “consecutive to a fall of 80 meters”, specified the same source, indicating that an investigation had been entrusted to the gendarmerie to determine the causes of the death of this man.

A path that he “should not have taken”

The searches, launched at the beginning of the afternoon after a call from walkers who had heard a cry for help, initially yielded nothing.

Then a second call, from relatives of the victim with no news from him, led to the deployment of two helicopters, including one from the air section of the gendarmerie (SAG) of Toulouse, equipped with cameras thermals.

PGHM rescuers were then “able to be dropped off and find the body”, at a location “very steep”, not far from a path “that he should not have taken”, the officer said.
