A death row inmate in Arizona has asked the state's highest court to schedule his execution earlier than expected. He had already been pushing for his sentence to be carried out.
If Aaron Brian Gunches is executed, Arizona would resume executions after a two-year hiatus during which the state overhauled its procedures.

The man convicted of a 2002 murder has asked to be executed in mid-February.
Without a lawyer, representing himself, he said his death sentence was “long overdue” and that the state was dragging its feet in asking the court for a legal briefing schedule before the execution, AP News reported.

The prosecutor’s office, for its part, said that a briefing schedule was necessary to ensure that prison officials could meet execution requirements, such as testing for the pentobarbital that will be used in his lethal injection.

The convict had already made an initial request two years ago, arguing that this would allow justice to be served and the victim’s family to have closure.
