Heat wave: Here are our tips for keeping your home cool without air conditioning

One of the problems with air conditioning is its initial cost for a very limited period of use. Its electricity consumption is not anecdotal: an air conditioning unit will consume between 300 and 500 kWh for 500 hours of operation in a single closed room. Suffice to say that in the long term, it is not ecological, and even less economical. Especially since air conditioning forces the inhabitant to close all the windows and doors when it is working.

In other words, it is more reasonable to do without, especially since there are a whole bunch of little tricks that can mitigate the impact of heat in the event of a heatwave. Here we come back to these little things to put in place in order to have a more pleasant summer in case of strong heat.

Leave the shutters closed

This seems obvious: don't let the sun settle in your home. The tiles on your windows absorb the sun and warm your home. It is therefore necessary to cover them as soon as the sun shines through by closing the shutters. Curtains, placed inside your home, will have a small effect, but they will not prevent the window panes from heating up abundantly.

Don't wait before closing the windows

It is recommended to close the shutters of course, but not only: when the outside temperature reaches or even exceeds that of your home, close your windows in addition to your shutters. Above all, do not let the hot air from outside fill your home. The ideal is to close your shutters and windows in the early morning, when the air is milder, then open them again at nightfall.

DIY your own air conditioning

Air conditioning is not recommended, that much has already been established. On the other hand, nothing prevents you from creating a sort of simulation of air conditioning by using a fan. As we know: the fan alone only circulates the surrounding air. If the ambient air is warm, the air returned by the fan will therefore be warm. But thanks to a little trick, you can cool everything down. So, place a frozen bottle of water in front of your fan, which will then cool the overall atmosphere by stirring the air over ice water.

Embrace the humidity

Your greatest friend in a heatwave is humidity. We all know this simple technique which consists of wetting a towel and putting it on your head for a while. But this method is limited in time, and only affects a specific area of your body.

The idea is to humidify your home as best as possible. To do this, you can for example hang wet towels on your windows: the evaporation will then absorb the heat and cool the room quickly. You can also place basins of water everywhere in your home to humidify the air.

Turn off all your electrical appliances

We too often underestimate the impact that certain electrical appliances can have on heat. Game consoles, PCs, televisions, all these devices heat up and contribute to making the atmosphere heavier, especially if it is already hot. It is therefore recommended to use them sparingly, and if you do not use them, to turn them off carefully. Even when on standby, they can heat your home significantly.

In the same way, even if it seems obvious, avoid equipment whose purpose is to heat  : hotplates, oven or iron should be avoided so as not to add heat to that already present.

Install plants in your home

This is an aspect that is not very popular: the fact of planting your house or apartment will have a significant impact on the indoor temperature. In fact, plants transpire and transfer the water contained in the soil to the atmosphere, which creates a much cooler atmosphere. If it is recommended to take advantage of climbing plants for a greater impact, potted plants will offer an interesting overall refreshment in summer.

Not counting the fact that it is 'a good way to simply decorate your home!

The night is your friend

Generally, nighttime is the calmest time in terms of temperature during a heatwave. This is the time when you can try to cool your apartment or house by opening the shutters and windows left closed during the day, in order to bring in as much as possible of fresh air possible.

It is even possible to use one or more fans to create a sort of current of fresh air passing through your home to recover a maximum night air. But be careful: in the morning, at dawn, you will have to get up to close everything before the sun reaches your house!
