A wave of intense heat is about to cross a large part of France, from this Monday 29 until Wednesday 31 July 2024. In total, no less than 40 departments have been placed at “significant risk” or on “orange alert” by La Chaîne Météo.
Get ready: nighttime temperatures will fall slightly below 20 °C while maximums will exceed 35°C in the afternoon with peaks reaching 40°C. This situation should continue for at least 3 consecutive days before temperatures start to drop from Thursday, according to the latest weather report published at 4 p.m. by the channel.
Orange heatwave alert
As of this Sunday afternoon, a heatwave is setting in across the south of France and will spread to many regions at the beginning of this week. The Mediterranean regions, the southwest and the north of the Alps will be the first to be affected. La Chaîne Météo has placed 34 departments at ” significant risk ” and 6 others on “orange alert”.

Among the departments that are placed at “significant risk”, we find Ain, Allier, Ardèche, Ariège, Bouches-du-Rhône, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Cher, Corrèze, Corse-du-Sud, Haute-Corse, Creuse, Drôme, Gard, Haute-Garonne, Indre, Isère, Loire, Lot, Nièvre, Puy-de-Dôme, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Var, Vendée, Vienne and Haute-Vienne.
The departments on orange alert are Dordogne, Gers, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Vaucluse.
The very high temperatures announced by the weather specialist will spread to a large southwest quarter with temperatures exceeding 35°C and peaks around 40°C in the south of Aquitaine as far as Midi-Pyrénées.
These extreme conditions will also affect the Mediterranean hinterland and reach as far as Lyon. Tuesday will be the hottest day of this heatwave with morning temperatures already between 17°C and 22°C in many cities in the south and center. In the afternoon, maximum temperatures will be between 33°C and 36°C according to La Chaine Météo, with peaks around 38°C in central regions such as Sologne, Berry, Val-de-Saône and as far south as Paris. After a first day of rain, the Olympics will have to face heavy sunshine for a few days.
The heat of the Maghreb
On Wednesday, clouds will then arrive from the west to cause a drop in temperatures. However, it will still be very hot in the east of the country, between the Lyon region and the lower Rhone Valley, where temperatures will exceed 35°C during the afternoon. Temperatures will start to drop on Thursday, but it will continue to be hot, with temperatures often reaching 30°C in the south of France.
