The Chromecast is one of Google's most popular products. As a reminder, the first version of this streaming dongle was launched in 2013. And what made it interesting at the time was that it allowed old televisions without an operating system to be transformed into one. smartTV capable of streaming content from platforms such as YouTube, Netflix or Spotify. Since then, the product has continued to evolve. And the most recent version, released in 2020, is equipped with the Google TV platform, and has a remote control.

Google is reportedly preparing a brand new product for TVs

In 2024, Google could finally end this product, in favor of a less compact, but more sophisticated device. In any case, this is what is suggested by an article recently published by the site 9to5Google. As you may already know, Google will have a product launch on August 13th. The firm should notably present its new smartphones, as well as new products based on artificial intelligence. But besides that, the firm could also offer a new product that could replace the Chromecast.

According to the 9to5Google article, this new Google feature would be called “Google TV Streamer”. And it would no longer be a dongle or an HDMI key, but rather a TV box. This box would have an inclined surface and an oval shape. And as noted by 9to5Google, which also shares an image, the surface is quite large compared to other boxes. For the moment, we do not know what features will be offered, but it is for example possible that this fairly large surface area allows the box to be paired with a smartphone or tablet. As for the remote control, it is quite similar to that of the latest Chromecast, but is also less compact.

Is Google going to abandon Chromecast ?

As usual, caution remains in order while awaiting official information. Moreover, it is also possible that Google will continue to market the Chromecast, while offering the “Google TV Streamer” box to those who want a better experience. We will know more after the Google conference on August 13. In the meantime, it is possible that new unofficial information will circulate on the web.

  • The first Chromecast has been launched in 2013, and this product is now one of the most popular Google products
  • The Mountain View firm is preparing an event in August and could launch a product similar to the Chromecast, but which no longer has the HDMI key format
  • It would rather be a less compact box, but which could offer more features
