Here's NordVPN's Fight Back Against VPN Blockers

Most people use VPNs to have a secure connection when using a public network, in airports, hotels, etc. However, some of these networks block VPNs. And to counter these restrictions, NordVPN has just announced a new protocol called NordWhisper. According to NordVPN's explanations, classic protocols, such as those based on OpenVPN or WireGuard, have characteristics and signatures that can be used by networks to detect VPN traffic. And this allows for filtering, despite obfuscation techniques.

NordWhisper, on the other hand, imitates normal internet traffic, in order to make the VPN more difficult to detect. “Essentially, it blends into regular internet activity, giving users a reliable way to browse restricted networks while maintaining the same encryption and security as other VPN protocols,” NordVPN says. The technology was created for people who use WiFi with VPN restrictions, such as airports, coffee shops, conferences, and more.

The only downside: NordWhisper can be slower

However, NordVPN suggests that this protocol should not be used routinely. While it is more effective at bypassing VPN blockers, NordWhisper can cause slowdowns in some cases. “[…] if you are connected to a normal network, we recommend that you stick to other protocols,” NordVPN explains. Otherwise, it also states that NordWhisper will evolve, as VPN blocking techniques evolve. On the other hand, the protocol should improve to be smarter, faster, and even more secure.

This new protocol is currently being rolled out. NordVPN will initially offer it on Windows, Android, and Linux platforms. But support for other platforms is expected to come later.
