For a few years now, Google has been doing everything it can to ensure that instead of using the old SMS, we switch to RCS technology. As a reminder, Google Messages, the default messaging app on Android smartphones, already supports this technology. And thanks to it, it is possible to enjoy features that are not available on SMS, such as emoji reactions, sending multimedia files without using MMS, or even end-to-end encryption that protects conversations.

But if, in 2024, you still use SMS, this new feature of Google Messages should finally make you change your mind. It is the ability to modify a text message after it has been sent. This feature was announced in May and according to our colleagues at 9to5Google, it is now available to everyone, on the Google Messages app.

How to edit an RCS text message that has already been sent ?

According to 9to5Google's explanation, once your text message has been sent, you have 15 minutes to modify its content, if you have made a typo or the message contains inaccurate information. To edit a message that has already been sent, simply long-press it, then tap the Edit icon (the pencil that appears at the top of the screen).

It is important to note that Google Messages only allows you to correct a message that has already been sent, but not to hide the first version. Indeed, it will be possible for the recipient to consult the history of modifications.

RCS is also coming to the iPhone

In any case, this year, the use of RCS should explode. Indeed, while Google continues to strengthen this successor to SMS, Apple has also decided to adopt this technology. This will allow iPhone and Android smartphone users to communicate without using SMS or going through a third-party messaging service like WhatsApp or Telegram.

As a reminder, RCS support is one of the new features of iOS 18, Apple's new operating system that will be available from this September.

  • For years, Google has been pushing us to use RCS instead of the old RCS
  • And now, thanks to an update to Google Messages, it is possible to edit an RCS text after it has been sent
  • RCS technology will also soon be supported by the iPhone, allowing iOS and Android users to communicate without having to rely on SMS or third-party messaging services like WhatsApp
