Heritage film producers demanded Friday that artificial intelligence (AI) actors ask their permission and pay them to be able to draw on their works in order to generate content.
This kind of action ” must receive their prior authorization and guarantee fair remuneration for all rights holders of these works,” argued the SCFP, the Syndicate of Heritage Film Catalogues (an expression which designates works released more than of 10 years).
The SCFP brings together ten production companies, including Gaumont, Pathé and the dedicated subsidiaries of Canal+, TF1 and M6.
The SCPF has in its sights “any data mining activity relating to the works (in its) catalogues (…) by artificial intelligence systems intended to generate (…) content such as texts, images, audio or complex video content”.
“At a time when AI and automatic content generation systems are proliferating, it is more essential than ever to ensure that the exploitation of works is done within a framework that respects copyright and intellectual property”, judges this body.
It says it is relying on “the right of opposition” recognized by the Intellectual Property Code.

To satisfy the demands of their users by producing texts or images upon simple request in everyday language, AI models need to feed on data that they find on the internet.
With the explosion of AI tools in the general public, remuneration for the use of this data has become a major issue. In addition to cultural works, media and press content are also concerned.
