Death on scene

A 5-year-old child was inside the machine at the time of the explosion and was pronounced dead at the scene. The reasons for the treatment the boy was receiving have not been disclosed.

His mother was standing nearby and was injured in the arms.

“Very rare”

“Hyperbaric chambers contain 100 percent oxygen, which is up to five times the amount of oxygen in a normal room,” Troy Fire Lt. Keith Young was quoted as saying by APNews, at a news conference.

The presence of such a large amount oxygen in a pressurized environment can make it extremely combustible. “This is very rare, and we are not sure what led to this incident,”, the fire lieutenant stressed.

Investigation to be entrusted to the State

“Nothing like this has happened in the more than 15 years that we have been offering this type of therapy. We do not know why or how this happened and we will participate in any investigations that need to be conducted,”, the Oxford Center officials said, according to the American media outlet.

The investigation into the explosion and fire will be entrusted to the State.
