A motion by Québec solidaire (QS) on the Gaza Strip caused quite an uproar in the Assembly on Tuesday: MP Haroun Bouazzi caused a scandal and the government accused him of being a “radical”.
The motion tabled by Solidarity MNA Ruba Ghazal called on the Assembly to acknowledge the comments of the UN Special Rapporteur, according to whom we are witnessing the “first colonial genocide broadcast live in Gaza.”
The government refused its consent to debate it, which raised the ire of Mr. Bouazzi.
“History will judge you,” shouted the MNA for Maurice-Richard off-mic, since he was not speaking at that precise moment, but loud enough for microphones to pick him up.
The parliamentary leader of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), Simon Jolin-Barrette, wasted no time in rising to condemn these comments and point out the violation of the House’s rules, while the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Frantz Benjamin, struggled to regain control.
“We have rules in our Assembly, the member for Maurice-Richard is a radical and he does not respect our Assembly,” said Mr. Jolin-Barrette.
