In September, Apple rolled out the macOS Sequoia update for compatible devices. And while you need a computer with an Apple Silicon chip to benefit from Apple Intelligence, the Cupertino company still rolled out this update (but without offering certain new features) to a few models that still use Intel processors. As a reminder, the company began its transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon chips, based on Arm technologies, in 2020. These new processors allow Apple to offer products that, in addition to having better performance, have better energy efficiency.

The most important security updates

Given the benefits of Apple Silicon processors, it’s likely that a good number of users have already upgraded their Macs to newer models. However, for those still using a Mac with an Intel processor, it’s natural to wonder how long they’ll be able to keep that device. And the good news is that Apple has a pretty good reputation when it comes to the longevity of its products. According to a Macworld article, Mac operating systems typically last 8 to 10 years. It’s also important to note that even if your Mac is no longer receiving the latest version of macOS, Apple continues to provide security updates for older versions.

This year, for example, in addition to releasing macOS Sequoia, which is the most recent version, Apple also released security updates for macOS Sonoma and macOS Ventura, the version of macOS that was released in 2022. So, even when your Mac is no longer receiving the latest version of macOS and new features, you can continue to use that device for a while.

Is Your Mac Out of Date ?

Otherwise, Apple publishes a website that lists products that are considered obsolete. “Products are considered obsolete if Apple has discontinued them for more than seven years,” the website states. Obsolescence, according to Apple, does not concern software updates, but rather the ability of consumers to get a product repaired.

The company states that once a product is considered obsolete, it no longer performs hardware repairs on it and repair parts for that product can no longer be ordered through service centers. “Mac notebook computers may be eligible for a battery-only repair for an extended period of up to 10 years from the last date the product was sold, subject to parts availability”, Apple nevertheless specifies.

In conclusion, if you have a Mac with an Intel processor, but which uses macOS Sonoma or macOS Ventura, or if your Mac has been updated to macOS Sequoia, you can continue to use this machine safely. However, it will also be necessary to ensure that this model can still be repaired by Apple.
