Microsoft's Copilot assistant, formerly Bing Chat, is a very interesting application. Indeed, it provides free access to two technologies that the ChatGPT application reserves for its paying users: the GPT-4 model, and the DALL-E 3 image generator. It is already available as a mobile application, which allows you to use its features on a native interface.
And if you're on Android, you can even replace your smartphone's default assistant, Google Assistant, with Copilot. As the feature is still under development, it is only available in beta. So, to replace Google Assistant with Microsoft Copilot, you must first install the beta version of this application.
If you have not yet installed Copilot on your smartphone, all you have to do is go to the app page on the Play Store (by searching for Copilot), then register for its beta program (press Join).

Once you have registered, you must wait a few minutes for this registration to be finalized.

Then, you can return to the Copilot application on Android, and check the version number of the app. The beta version of Copilot which replaces Google Assistant is version 27.9.420225014 (at the time of writing).

Once this verification is done, you can proceed to the installation.
If you have installed Copilot beta version 27.9.420225014, or a newer version, you can now replace the default assistant on your smartphone with that of Microsoft, and easily take advantage of GPT-4.
To do this, you must go to the settings of your smartphone, Applications, Default apps, then Digital assistant apps. There you need to tap on “Default digital assistant app”.
Then all you have to do is select the Copilot app, which will open normally displays among the options. However, it should be remembered that the Android settings interface can vary from one version of the OS to another, and from one brand to another.

Once this setting is finalized, you can quickly access Copilot using the key that is normally used to invoke Google Assistant. On my OnePlus 10 Pro, it's a long press on the power button.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Copilot's integration with Android is still far from perfect. When you invoke Copilot, you are simply returned to the application's home screen. And you still need to tap the microphone icon to use voice input. But we can hope that Microsoft is already working on an experience closer to what we would have on a real assistant for Android.
Otherwise, it should also be remembered that according to rumors, OpenAI is working on a similar functionality for its ChatGPT application for Android.
