Humanity is approaching the era where robots will do our household chores

Unitree G1 is the name of the humanoid robot developed by the Chinese company Unitree Robotics. What is immediately impressive about this one, which measures 1.32 m and weighs 35 kilos, is its ability to move through obstacles while maintaining perfect balance, a bit like the machines designed by Boston Dynamics.

A little more patience

Sold for $16,000, this model has three fingers that should give it a certain dexterity. Enough to imagine him doing the household chores for us ? This is in any case the idea developed by our colleague from BGR in a recent article.

In fact, we can imagine that these robots will soon be able to communicate directly with us thanks to the latest innovations in generative AI. OpenAI and its rivals Google have already demonstrated this.

There is nothing to stop us from dreaming of seeing a machine capable of carrying out the most tedious tasks at home, such as watering plants, starting a washing machine, preparing a meal, etc.

But as the American media rightly points out, we are not there yet, and we will probably have to wait a few years before what is still a fantasy becomes reality.

For the time being, if the robot is able to understand our orders, its algorithms do not yet allow it to perform all the tasks, even if researchers are already working on these subjects. Similarly, the battery that lasts two hours is still too limited to imagine a domestic robot functioning in the long term. We must therefore still hope for significant software developments, but this dream that once seemed unattainable is no longer so far away.

Scientists are optimistic

As a reminder, in 2023 we told you about this study carried out with 65 researchers specializing in AI from the University of Oxford and Ochanomizu University in Japan. The researchers then estimated that robots could perform 39% of household tasks by 2033.

They were also quite specific in mentioning ten of them: running errands, shopping (other than grocery shopping), cleaning the house, washing dishes, cooking, ironing, doing laundry, helping raise a child, gardening, maintaining the house and car.

To find out more, we invite you to reread our article dedicated to this subject here.
