I replaced the screen of my Fold 6 with an original part purchased from the Samsung website

Folding smartphones require special attention, especially when it comes to protecting their screens. If I had to make a deduction from the marks on the external screen of this Samsung Z Fold 6, the previous owner must have used the folding smartphone without a case or screen protector, putting it in the same pocket as his key ring. Faced with this observation and tired of using a scratched screen, only one solution was necessary: ​​replacing the touch screen.

When you have to do things yourself

Separating the screen from its touch screen is almost impossible for an individual, especially without specific equipment. According to my research, the Fnac WeFix repair service does not offer this intervention.

In fact, the repair service does not yet work on the Samsung Fold 6. With my few past experiences in changing smartphone screens, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

The real challenge in a home repair remains the supply of reliable parts. Screens sold on eBay and other platforms often hide unpleasant surprises: an LCD instead of a promised AMOLED, dubious quality or an imperfect display…

Samsung has changed the game with its official parts sales site. From the A05s to the Z Fold 6, including the S range from 20, the whole is very complete. The external screen needed for my Z Fold 6 was offered at the more than reasonable price of 102 euros, while having the assurance that I would receive an official part with the quality of the original model.

Express delivery and a nice surprise

In just 72 hours after ordering, my package arrived from the German warehouse. Samsung took care of the details with packaging entirely made of recyclable cardboard (to perpetuate the virtuous circle) and a perfectly protected screen.

Not being sure about the presence of the adhesives needed for assembly, I ordered them on eBay in anticipation of the change. To my great surprise, they were finally present in the Samsung package, information that was however absent from the product sheet.

Hop, packed it's weighed

Being rather familiar with this type of repair with 6 or 7 smartphone screen changes under my belt, I have an iFixit repair kit that I use here. Samsung also offers its own similar kit for 29 euros for people wishing to get started in self-repair.

After three minutes of heating between iOpener and hair dryer, I spotted the ideal entry point: the thin notch of the speaker. The manufacturing quality of the Fold 6 is evident in its finishes, with an almost non-existent space between the screen and the frame.

The extraction of the old screen went smoothly. The adhesive gradually gives way under the picks, there is only one cable to disconnect and the deal is in the bag. Samsung has even thought to integrate markers to facilitate the installation of the new adhesives.

I connected the new screen, applied constant pressure with a dictionary for a few hours so that the adhesion was perfect and that was it.

A perfect result

In twenty minutes flat, I restored all the splendor that this Z Fold 6 deserves. The old screen, which came out intact from the operation, can even be used to repair another device. I immediately protected the new screen with a glass protector, installed immediately for an impeccable result, without the slightest dust or air bubble.

This experiment proves that repairing a high-end smartphone is now easily accessible to DIYers again. Samsung's spare parts site removes the main obstacle to self-repair, which is easy access to reliable official components. An initiative that should encourage more users to repair rather than replace their devices.

I hope that my feedback highlights the ease of changing this part which is often the first to break when a smartphone is dropped.
