IN BRIEF

  • Guillaume Canet, actor and extreme sports enthusiast, shared his experience during the Legend show on YouTube on January 8, 2025.
  • He recounted a paramotoring accident where he injured his thumb while trying to sit in the harness after takeoff.
  • Despite the risks, Guillaume Canet says these experiences make him feel alive, a central theme of his film Ad Vitam.

A horse-riding enthusiast, Guillaume Canet also enjoys skydiving, paramotoring, and paragliding. However, he has already been the victim of an accident… Wednesday, January 8, 2025, on the set of the show Legend, on YouTube, it was while he was in the middle of promoting the film Ad Vitam, in which he plays a former member of the GIGN, that the actor assured that he needed to feel alive. Although he already paraglides alone, he now wants to learn to skydive alone. “Paramotoring is a real passion too”, he assured.

Faced with Guillaume Pley, Marion Cotillard's companion, mentioned a little mishap that had happened to him a few years earlier. “I really wanted to take off on my birthday. It was a flight at a time in my life when I wasn't feeling great and I wasn't confident. I didn't feel great. And then I said to myself: 'I have to do something crazy, and feel alive'. I heard about this activity and I went to see a guy in the Yvelines. I told him: 'Here I want to fly in three days for my birthday', and he told me: 'No, we don't do it like that! First you have to learn how to handle the sail, the engine…'”, he recalled.

Guillaume Canet: “I force myself, and there I hear a bang”

Finally, the instructor taught him the basics in an intense way and everything fell into place. “On the birthday, three days later the weather was good, and he said to me: 'Let's go!'. There I raise the sail, I leave, I start running, I put the gas, I take off and I'm panicking all the same.I take off and then, normally, you have to let go of the controls and take the harness that you have underneath to sit in. By doing that, I was so tense… I force, I force, and there I hear a snap!”, he said, a smile on his lips.

While he felt intense pain, Guillaume Canet explained: “I feel pain, but intense… In fact, I raise my hand and I had my thumb… I tore my ligament, I have a scar. I turned my thumb over and my thumb was hanging.I was like, 'Oh, fuck, shit.' And the guy on the radio was like, 'If everything's okay, move your legs,' so I moved my legs and I thought I'd finish it, I'd do this when I landed. I landed, I pulled it out and I put it back in, except I had broken the ligament”.

Guillaume Canet: “We never feel as alive as in these circumstances”

For Sud-Ouest, the actor had already indicated: We can be addicted to danger, to risk-taking, because we never feel as alive as in these circumstances. I do parachuting, paramotoring, paragliding: every time, in the evening, when I'm at home, I ask myself why I do all this, I tell myself that it doesn't make sense, that it's completely stupid”, before slipping: “And the next morning, I can't wait to go back”.

In Ad Vitam, viewers will be able to discover Guillaume Canet paramotoring. The film's pitch ? “Former member of the GIGN Franck Lazareff now lives with his wife Leo and is about to become a father. It is then that a criminal organization linked to his years in the GIGN bursts into their home and kidnaps the young woman. In exchange for the life of his wife, Franck will have to obey the orders of the group. Helped by his friend Ben, he only has 4 hours to act, we can read on Wikipedia.
