If you have a Microsoft account (which is very likely if you use Windows), you will have to get used to logging out of your account after using it on a PC that is not your own. On a help page, relayed by our colleagues at The Verge, the Redmond firm indicates this important change: “The web browser sign-in experience changes when you sign in to a product or service with your Microsoft account. Starting in February 2025, you’ll stay signed in automatically unless you sign out or use private browsing.”

The easiest way is to use private browsing, which automatically signs you out when you close the window. Otherwise, if you’re not using private browsing, you’ll need to make sure your Microsoft account has been signed out before you exit. The company warns that if you forget to sign out of your Microsoft account on someone else's computer, someone else could gain access to highly sensitive information, such as the content of your Outlook.com emails, your OneDrive files, or your search and browsing history.

Why the change ?

Microsoft doesn’t say why it’s making the change. But our colleagues at TechRadar believe the idea is to make Microsoft products, like Outlook or OneDrive, more convenient for people who regularly use the browser versions of those products.

It’s worth noting that many online services we use on a daily basis don’t automatically log out their users after each session. However, it’s still important to know that from now on, your Microsoft account will work like those services.

• Microsoft says that starting in February, your account will remain signed in to the devices you use unless you’re using private browsing or manually signing out
• If you use your Microsoft account on a device that isn’t yours and don’t sign out, someone else could have access to sensitive information, like your emails or files in the cloud
• Microsoft may have decided to implement this change to make its online services more convenient on web browsers
