In 2020, Apple revolutionized its Macs by starting the transition of its computers from Intel processors to Apple Silicon chips, designed by Apple, and based on Arm architectures. Indeed, thanks to Apple Silicon chips, Apple has been able to offer computers that are more efficient, but also more energy efficient (which extends battery life on MacBooks).
At the moment, many Macs using an Intel processor are not obsolete. For example, macOS Sequoia, the new version arriving this fall, will be compatible with machines launched in 2017, 2018 and 2019, before the start of the transition to Apple Silicon chips. However, every time Apple releases a new version of its operating system, the company gives you new good reasons to buy a new model with an Apple Silicon chip. Indeed, certain new products from the Cupertino company are only compatible with Macs using at least the M1 chip.
So, even if your 2018 MacBook Pro, or your 2017 iMac Pro still satisfy you in terms of performance, you may be tempted to buy a more recent model, to take advantage of all of Apple's new features.
In its defense, Apple seems to want to limit the list of features reserved for Macs with Intel processors. For example, whether you use an Intel processor or an Apple Silicon chip, macOS Sequoia will let you control your iPhone from your computer screen (unless Apple blocks this feature in the European Union). However, the real-time transcription feature will be reserved for models using at least the M1 chip. And Apple Intelligence, Apple's big new feature in 2024, will also be reserved for devices that use an Apple Silicon chip.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000And this is not the first time that Apple has launched features reserved for machines with Apple Silicon chips. For example on macOS Sonoma, the functionality which allows the user to be superimposed with the content they are presenting during video conferences requires an Apple Silicon M1 chip, at least. The Apple Silicon chip is also essential to take advantage of the “Game Mode” of macOS Sonoma, which optimizes the operating system when playing video games.
En d' In other words, if some Macs with Intel processors continue to receive the latest version of macOS, they do not benefit from all the new features.
As a reminder, here, today, are the Apple computers that use an Apple Silicon chip:
